Holyoke Public Service Committee Advances Poet Laureate Concept, Four Board Appointments

HOLYOKE — April 9, 2026 — Holyoke's Public Service Committee voted unanimously to recommend the full City Council explore creating a poet laureate position for the city, while clearing four mayoral appointments to city boards. Councilor Talia Talheimer, the proposal's lead sponsor, described the position as carrying a stipend of $500 to $1,000 annually for a two-year term, funded through a Holyoke Local Cultural Council grant at no cost to city taxpayers, with a goal of naming a poet laureate by 2027.
