HOLYOKE -- April 9, 2026, Holyoke's Public Service Committee voted unanimously to recommend the full City Council explore creating a poet laureate position for the city, while clearing four mayoral appointments to city boards. Councilor Talia Talheimer, the proposal's lead sponsor, described the position as carrying a stipend of $500 to $1,000 annually for a two-year term, funded through a Holyoke Local Cultural Council grant at no cost to city taxpayers, with a goal of naming a poet laureate by 2027. Councilor Howie Graney shaped the final motion language, framing it as a recommendation to "explore" the position rather than an outright endorsement. The committee also recommended appointments of Kevin Rice and Susan Brouillette to the Local Historic District Commission and Henry Martinez Cartagena, a 2025 Holyoke High School graduate, to the Parks and Recreation Commission, all pending City Council confirmation.
