Holyoke Council Committee Approves Demolition Permit for Vacant Former Kmart Building

HOLYOKE — May 18, 2026 — Holyoke council committee unanimously clears the way to demolish the long-vacant former Kmart building at 2201 Northampton Street. The Development and Government Relations Committee voted 5-0 Monday to grant a special permit to Cypress Acquisitions LLC, a subsidiary of Dallas-based retail developer Cypress Equities, authorizing demolition of the nonconforming structure under zoning ordinance section 4.73. Attorney Daniel Gleisman of McDermott, Reynolds and Gleisman PC, appearing with managing director of development Don Bouvier, said the company has signed a purchase agreement for the Kmart parcel and reached a preliminary agreement to also acquire the adjacent retail plaza, assembling a site exceeding 350,000 square feet for what Bouvier described as "a multimillion dollar investment in this property and in the city of Holyoke." Demolition is targeted for December with a 60-day window; no anchor tenant was named. The committee also approved a residential deck permit at 5 Brightwood Avenue and declared a vacant 6,534-square-foot lot at 141 West Street — assessed at $39,000 — surplus property available for sale.
